1903 – WEBSTER MILLSAPS FITZHUGH born.

1904 – MARY LOUISE PERKINS born.

1928 – LOUISE PERKINS FITZHUGH born.

1929 – Mary Louise Perkins and Millsaps Fitzhugh divorce.

1930 – Millsaps wins custody and Louise is taken to live with him and her new stepmother SALLY TAYLOR FITZHUGH. She also gains a new uncle, the future Pulitzer-Prize winning author, PETER TAYLOR.

1946 – Louise graduates Miss Hutchison’s School with JOAN WILLIAMS.

1949 – Louise attends Bard College with Joan Williams, who begins a relationship with WILLIAM FAULKNER. Louise meets her college advisor and lifelong confident, poet JAMES MERRILL.

1951 – Louise and girlfriend AMELIA BRENT move into the same building as BETTY and MITCH GRAYSON at 317 17th St., New York City.

1952 – March -September: Louise lives in Paris.

1953 – Back in NYC, Louise meets FRANCES BURKE (FRANCE). Frances’s father is KENNETH BURKE, the modernist literary critic and philosopher, and through him is acquainted with writer DJUNA BARNES, and photographer, BERENICE ABBOT. Frances’s aunt is DOROTHY DAY, and Frances’s godmother is the poet, MARYANNE MOORE.

1953 – Millsaps Fitzhugh appointed US attorney for Western Tennessee (served until 1959).

1955 – Louise and France live together at 7 Leroy St., Greenwich Village.

1955 – October: Louise showed paintings at the Village Art Center and the Panoras Gallery.

1956 – March: Louise exhibits at the New York Public Library’s Hudson Park branch. Louise and France exhibit at the Downtown Community School Show, Exhibition, and Sale.

1956 – March 21: France and Louise travel to Europe, New York to Plymouth on the Liberte.

1956 – May: Louise and France arrive in Bologna.

1956 – August 18: Amelia’s death in a tragic propeller accident in Arkansas.

1956 – September: Louise begins a brief romantic relationship with FABIO RIETI.

1957 – May:  Louise departs Naples for New York City.

1957 – Louise meets ALIXE GORDIN, FREDERICA LESER, and MARIJANE MEAKER. Louise begins a romantic relationship with Alixe.

1958 – Louise meets SANDRA SCOPPETTONE at a drinks party on West Thirty-Third Street.

1960 – Suzuki Bean, illustrated by Louise and written by Sandra, is completed and sold by literary agent GLORIA SAFIRE to Doubleday.

1961 – Suzuki Bean is published by Doubleday.

1962 –Louise joins Playwrights Unit at The Actors Studio, begins work on an autobiographical play titled “Mother Sweet Father Sweet.”

1962 – Louise meets MAURICE SENDAK, LORRAINE HANSBERRY and JANE WAGNER.

1963 – Louise begins working on Harriet the Spy.

1963 – May 7: Louise’s works are exhibited in the Banfer Gallery show in New York.

1963 – Louise meets URSULA NORDSTROM and CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW.

1964 – Summer: Louise and Alixe’s near 7-year relationship ends.

1964 – Louise begins a romantic relationship with CONNIE FORD.

1964 – October 21: Harriet the Spy is sold by literary agent PATRICIA SHARTLE to Harper.

1965 – October: The Long Secret is published by Harper and Row.

1967 – Louise and Connie end their 4-year relationship.

1968 – Louise and Sandra begin work on Bang Bang You’re Dead.

1969 – Spring: Louise begins a romantic relationship with LOIS MOREHEAD.

1969 – Bang Bang You’re Dead is published by Harper and Row.

1974 – November 19: Louise Fitzhugh died of aneurysm in New Milford Hospital, Connecticut.

1974 – Nobody’s Family is Going to Change is published posthumously by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
